Hi all, I just saw Bob Dylan in concert at the Sedalia State Fair in the State of Missouri. I have never heard his voice in person or did not know much about him. His concert and voice is remarkable. My heart has continued to sing since last Saturday night. I am greatly greatful to my bosses wife for inviting me to his concert. We are both social workers and we work for the blind in the State of Missouri. I would love an opportunity to just speak with Bob. Is this possible?... and how do go about locating him?...
Sincerely and with care

Hi All,
I was hoping to attend the Hibbing All-Class Reunion this week in Hibbing, MN, where Dylan grew up (from age 6).
However, a wedding and the unexpected costs involved got in
the way. My Internet friend Linda Suazo (nee Erickson) will be there with some members of her large family (nine
kids, two adopted). Linda was in the class of 1960 and sat
behind Bob in Study Hall in 1958-59. Her good friend Jerry
taught Bob how to play the guitar (which is not mentioned in
any biographies, including the latest, DOWN THE HIGHWAY,
which is excellent, btw.) As you probably know, Bob started
out on piano, taking lessons from an early age, and played piano in several rock bands in highschool (one of which was
called "The Golden Chords"). Bob's ambition was to play
piano in Little Richard's band (although Little Richard
sort of took care of that instrument, as did Jerry Lee Lewis
in his band too.) Imagine if Bob had stuck to piano and
avoided folk music altogether; he'd probably still be
working in coffee houses or seedy nightclubs scratching out
a living. Bob is a good piano player, however, as you'll
notice if you listen to "Every Grain of Sand" and "Forever
Young" amongst others.
If anyone wants to check out Dylan's lyrics (and chords),
there are several sites available that provide them, free
of charge (the same goes for Elvis).
Getting back to the Hibbing reunion, Bob likely was invited
(class of 1959), but he won't be there, as he is scheduled
to perform at a famous castle in Edinburgh on the 13th and will be performing in Dublin two nights later, as part of a
European tour listed at the official Dylan site. He also
plays in various parts of the U.S. in July and August. I'm
hoping to see him in Las Vegas on August 24 (I've never seen
Bob live before, and am determined to see him at least once
before either one of us dies; I'm 56, but you never know,
and, of course, Bob is now 60, although apparently in much
better health since he quit drinking (and possibly quit
smoking too, given the near-fatal illness he had related to
the lining of his heart, described in detail in DOWN THE
HIGHWAY.)
Bye for now.

Hi (again),
I just received the latest biography of Dylan from the
Abbotsford library, which just came out a month ago. It is
entitled DOWN THE HIGHWAY and is written by Howard Sounes
and is published by Grove Press. It has been revealed that
Bob married one of his back-up singers, Carolyn Dennis,
back around 1985 and they were divorced in 1992. A
daughter was born around the time of the marriage named
Desiree, which prompted them to keep the marriage and
birth a secret so she could have a more normal upbringing.
I recently noticed that the album "Under the Red Sky"
from the late 1980s is dedicated to his daughter (her
nickname is given). Several songs on the album have always
struck me as sounding like children's songs, which now
makes more sense. Dylan also recorded "This Old Man" for
a Disney album released in the early 1990s, which might
have also been motivated by having a young daughter.

Happy Birthday Bob! (Gee, I wonder if he checks out this
site - not likely). The Vancouver Province has a picture
of Bob on the front page, with a full-page article including
a photo of Bob receiving his Golden Globe award earlier this
year (for "Things Have Changed" which later won an Oscar
too). The Vancouver Sun, a better paper, did not mention
Bob's birthday in its entertainment section (shame, shame),
but a listing of upcoming events includes a birthday
celebration tonight at the Media Club (where journalists
presumably hang out), which I plan to attend. I hope
everyone that reads this site played some of their
favourite Dylan albums today. My favourites are:
1) Desire 2) Oh Mercy 3) Blood on the Tracks 4) Highway 61
Revisited 5) Time Out Of Mind 6) Blonde On Blonde
7) The Times they Are A-Changing 7) Slow Train Coming
8) John Wesley Harding 9) Bringing It All Back Home
10) Freewheeling. I now have all of Dylan's albums from
1962-1989 ("Bob Dylan" through "Oh Mercy" on vinyl), plus
several albums on cassette as well as several on CD; I've
made copies of the remaining few (thanks to the nearby
Whatcom County Library system in Wash. state.)

As most Dylan fans know, Bob graduated from Hibbing Highschool in Hibbing, Minnesota, which is located northwest of Duluth (where Bob was born), not too far from the Canadian border (which makes Bob almost a Canuck). In 1969, as described in Anthony Scaduto's 1972 biography BOB DYLAN: AN INTIMATE BIOGRAPHY (now available in an updated edition from Barnes & Noble), Bob actually showed up for his 10th reunion celebrations, along with his wife Sara (who was pregnant with Jacob) and their other children. He arrived at Moose Hall around 11:00 pm and stayed for an hour. His old girlfriend Echo Helstrom got up the nerve to visit his table and told Bob that she had written a song. The title, of course, was "Boy From the North Country".
There is no indication that Bob performed while there (NASHVILLE SKYLINE was his most recent album). In 1993 the community of Hibbing had an "all-class" reunion, and thousands of graduates showed up, but Bob didn't make it.
However, Hibbing is having another "all-class" reunion (see http://www.hibbinghigh.com) from July 11-15. Maybe Bob will make an appearance again (although I believe he will still be touring). Thanks to Linda Suavo (nee Erickson - Class of 1960) for information about the reunion. BTW, Linda sat next to Bob in study hall, and a good friend of hers named Jerry taught Bob how to play the guitar (Bob had started out on the piano, as he idolized Little Richard, and probably Jerry Lee Lewis too.)

Bob's been in the news a lot lately. He won an Oscar for his song "Things Have Changed" from WONDER BOYS, and performed on the show while on tour, and made a lovely acceptance speech (as a Vancouver critic pointed out, he looked a lot like Vincent Price, with his thin moustache and spooky delivery). Bo earlier had won a Golden Globe for the same show, and was there to receive it (I missed that show, so don't know what he had to say). There's a new biography coming out on Dylan that apparently reveals for the first time that Bob got married to one of his back-up singers, Carolyn Dennis (who is on the Budokan album) in the mid-1980s, producing a daughter, who is a teenager now. The marriage ended in the early 1990s, and cost Bob a bundle, requiring him to do a lot of touring to pay his bills. Finally, there is a lengthy and fascinating article in ROLLING STONE magazine April 12, 2001, issue no. 866) about "Dylanologists", a term originally associated with A.J. Weberman (who is referred to and quoted in the first Dylan biography from 1972, which is now available in an updated edition from Barnes & Noble). The author makes a big mistake near the beginning, referring to the original version of THE FREEWHEELIN' BOB DYLAN, which had four different songs on it, than the "official" version released a month or so later (in 1963). The author seemed to think that the original had four "extra" songs. I have written a letter to the editor of RS, which hopefully will appear in issue 868. A mono copy of the original version sold for $10,000 in the early 1990s, and a stereo version sold for even more, although the amount was not published. It was not in good shape, however. A near-mint stereo copy is apparently worth $20,000 if one actually exists still (check your local landfill).

I came across an incredible book entitled THE SUPERHUMAN CREW at our local library, published by the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The book features close-up sections of a 1888 painting by James Ensor (1960-1949)from Belgium entitled "Christ's Entry Into Brussels", which is considered a masterpiece, and which can be seen at the Getty Museum. Accompanying sections of the painting (the whole painting is also shown) are lyrics from Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row" (another masterpiece), which was originally on his 1965 album HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED, which he also performed on the MTV UNPLUGGED album several years ago.
The book also includes a CD of Dylan's song. It certainly is an effective combination.

Good to see that Bob won a Golden Globe award for best movie song - "Things Have Changed". There is a good chance he could also win a Grammy and an Oscar for the same song.
Back in the early 1970s, Bob should have won all three awards for "Knockin' On Heaven's Door", but somehow he didn't. I haven't seen WONDER BOYS yet, which is being held back from video stores, likely in the hope that it gets nominated for a few Oscars. I read the novel last year, which was very good (and very amusing). I missed the Globe awards, but saw some brief highlights on the news the next day, including the fact that Bob was actually there!
He received a standing ovation, but they didn't actually show his remarks, nor did Entertainment Tonight (which didn't even mention his awards; they were too busy gushing over all the dresses, the brainless idiots). - Peter

Haven't had a chance to check out the whole deal yet, but I like what I've seen. I really appreciated Side's article, as for the response, if it was better formulated and perhaps "as long as" Side's, the writer may have had a point. It's interesting about an infinite number of predjudices, but surely that's not real? Language evaporates and becomes meaningless and we coil into ourselves - that's solipsism... some people buy it, but youv'e gotta extend it all the way out and what can we possibly make out of even these comments? nonsense!

Bob Dylan and Paul Simon both received very positive reviews
in Vancouver's "Georgia Straight" (June 17-24, 1999 issue).
Here are some of the descriptive portions of the review:
"snarling rendition of 'Masters of War'"; "fire in his
delivery"; "limp-sounding 'Mr. Tambourine Man'"; "rousing,
bouncy 'Tangled Up in Blue'"; "searing 'All Along the
Watchtower'"; "Dylan"..traded nifty licks with his excel-
lent lead guitarist, Larry Campbell, on 'Stuck Inside...'";
"some parts of..altered versions [of his '60s classics]
sounded flat and awkwardly nuanced, as with 'It's All Over
Now..', but 'Highway 61'..was given a new charge of
vitality...[Bob actually] broke into a smile as he bobbed
and swayed along."; "hard-rocking 'Like a Rolling Stone'
[encore] that brought out the song's magnificent structural
dynamics." Bob finished with an acoustic version of "It
Ain't Me Babe". Dylan and Simon together sang "Sounds of
Silence", "I Walk the Line", which "segued" into "Blue Moon
of Kentucky", ending with "Knockin' On Heaven's Door".
That was it for Bob. Overall, the review seemed to be
more favourable than unfavourable, but Simon clearly got
better treatment from the local critics, and apparently
had a greater impact on the crowd.

Bob Dylan and Paul Simon performed separately and
together ("Sounds of Silence") at Vancouver's GM Place

positive review in Sunday's Vancouver Province. There
will undoubtedly be a more detailed review in the Georgia
Straight later this week (free entertainment/politics paper).

I came across a CD at the library the other day entitled
"Touched By An Angel: The Album", which features various
songs that have been performed on the CBS television show
(presumably, as I never watch it). Included is an alternate
"take" of Bob Dylan's great song "Dignity", which appeared
initially on his "Greatest Hits, Vol. 3" CD (it was an
outtake from the "Oh Mercy" sessions; there is also a live
version on Dylan's "Unplugged" album.)
Also, there is an alternate take of "Shelter From the Storm"
on the "Jerry Maguire" soundtrack, which also appears on
Dylan's recent greatest hits CD (I'm not certain of the
exact title.) Check 'em out.

I say that Dylan is a great poet precisely because of V.A.'s
observations about poetry. To me, Dylan is the only poet I
am aware of who allows the listener to identify
fully with the lyrics. Each listener is given the
opportunity to interperate the lyrics in a way that is
individually satisfying to themselves. It is this allowing
of the listener to create their own interpretation of the
lyric which I applaud in Dylan.

In response to Ness in Melbourne: HARD RAIN: A DYLAN
COMMENTARY by Tim Riley (New York: Knopf 1992) is an
excellent analysis of Dylan's lyrics. Also DYLAN: A MAN
CALLED ALIAS (London Bloomsbury 1992) by Richard Williams is
well worth reading. I recently saw a hardcover book which
analyses all of Bob's sixties songs, although I don't recall
the title. Check your library; they might have all three
(and others). I picked up a fabulous reference book a few
years ago, entitled ABSOLUTELY DYLAN by a British writer,
which is absolutely essential if you are an obsessed Dylan
admirer (like me). Cheers.

Drew MacMillan refers to Dylan switching from folk to rock.
Actually, Bob's very first single (which appears on the
Biograph box set), entitled "Mixed Up Confusion", was pure
rock 'n' roll. Given that he was in a rock band in high-
school and idolized Buddy Holly amongst others (he was in
the third row at Buddy's second-to-last concert in Duluth),
Bob kind of got sidetracked doing his Woody Guthrie imita-
tion, and really came into his own when he rediscovered his
rock 'n' roll roots.

I don't care if he made the switch from folk to rock n' roll.
He's the best ever. "Maggie's Farm" was so great how he
responded against those who didn't want him to change. "He
hands you a nickel; he hands you a dime; and he asks you
with a smile if you're having a good time. I ain't gonna work

Oops! I must have forgotten to include the title of Bob's

that only goes to show that Dylan is not God.)

Although there isn't a complete recording of the Isle of
Wight concert that I know of, several songs by Dylan and
The Band appear on SELF-PORTRAIT (not the most impressive
performances of Dylan's career). By the way, I was born in
Brighton (1945).
Has there been a more beautiful love song written in recent
years, that Garth Brooks has popularized (earlier recorded by
Billy Joel at Bob's request, which appears on his "Greatest
Hits, Vol. 3" album)? Of course, it also appears on Bob's
album TIME OUT OF MIND (did he get the title from Steely
Dan, who got "Can't Buy a Thrill" from Bob)?
Finally, Sheryl Crow's latest album includes a new song
by Bob called "Mississippi" (apparently he asked her to
record it.) - Peter Whitmey

In an earlier comment, I referred to a CD/record store in
Minneapolis which was formerly called "Positively 4th St."
After changing owners, it was given a new name, which should
read "Know Name Records, Inc.", located at 805 4th St. S.E.;
their slogan is "The Name to Know For Music". Also, Dylan's
album that I referred to is "Bob Dylan: Live 1966" and was
recorded in Manchester (not Albert Hall, as bootleg copies
indicated for years.)

In a previous comment, I mentioned having stayed on 4th St.
in the "Dinkytown" area of Minneapolis near the University
of Minnesota campus (located on both sides of the
Mississippi), and the fact that a music store near my motel
used to be called "Positively 4th Street" (now "Noname
Music"). The question came to mind as to whether Dylan
was referring to his old stomping grounds as a first-year
student at U. of M. in 1959-60 as opposed to 4th Street in
Greenwich Village in his terrificly bitter 1966 song. Well,
the liner notes for "Bob Dylan: Live" written by an old
friend from St. Paul supports the possibility that Bob
just might have been referring to both 4th Streets after
all.

influenced by Dylan. To get an idea of what I mean by
"influence" check out my article posted on this site.
I want to make contact with poets such as this so as

The "untouchable" love of my life, Bobby, filled my heart with the sweetest mouth harp lullaby I've ever heard. Saturday night, Atlanta, final concert of 1998 was the happiest and most content I've ever seen him. His glow radiated throughout the audience and consumed my heart. Even though his soft compassionate harp lullaby was for the song 'It ain't me babe', I still melted feeling the song wasn't for me, but the lullaby was mine, all mine!

I was in Minneapolis last May and ended up staying in a
motel on 4th St. in "Dinkytown" near the University of
Minnesota. I knew from having read several biographies
about Bob that he had lived in that area while a student
at U of M in 1959-60. It turns out that I was on the
very street where Bob first performed while a student
(at the Purple Onion, which is still there). He also
started referring to himself as "Bob Dillon" and then
"Bob Dylan" while in Minneapolis. When I got home I
discovered that he lived in an apartment three blocks
from my motel. A block away is a used CD/tape/record
store called "No Name Music" which used to be called
"Postively 4th St." in reference to one of Bob's great
sixties songs ("You got a lot of nerve to say you were
my friend, when I was down you just stood there grinnin'").
Some people I spoke to in the area think Dylan was refer-
ring to 4th St. in Dinkytown and not 4th St. in Greenwich
Village. Which one is correct?
I also spoke to a lady on the Greyhound a few years
earlier just outside Minneapolis who was from Hibbing. It
turned out that her son was valedictorian of the class of
'59 and a good friend of Bob's (who came to the house
regularly). She even bought her appliances at the
Zimmerman's store. Apparently, Bob's brother, Mike Z.
still lives in the area. Cheers from B.C. (not a state)
