PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR:

INTERNET & RELATED RESOURCES FOR ORIENTAL STUDIES

National Committee for

Information Resources on Asia

(formerly: National Council on Orientalist Library Resources)

Tuesday 12 & Wednesday 13 October 2010

The NACIRA (formerly NCOLR)  will be holding a two day seminar on Internet resources for Oriental studies at Cambridge University Library, West Road, Cambridge CB3 9DR, beginning at 10:30 on Tuesday 12 and ending at 17:00 on Wednesday 13 October 2010. This two day seminar is aimed at someone who is using computers and the Internet in Oriental Studies in any of its aspects. Please note that there is a *limit of twelve places* on the course.

This is an ideal opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with a wide range of colleagues, especially valuable for those who work alone or in small numbers in the oriental aspects of their work in their institution.

The first morning session will be aimed at introducing Oriental resources on the Internet. All participants will have their own PC.  Subjects covered will be determined by what participants voice an interest in, and will reflect the fast changing face of computers in libraries. We expect to include a session on new technologies (blogs, wikis etc) and a session on Optical Character Recognition and Asian languages.  Subject specialists for Chinese, Japanese and Korean, Near Eastern and Central Asian, and South Asia and Tibet will be available throughout the day.

After lunch at the  Needham Research Institute   we will visit the Language Centre to discuss and see relevant developments there, both in Internet video and other language learning resources and in media such as DVD, receiving satellite broadcasts from around the world, encryption hurdles, and the like.

That evening there will be a traditional college meal included in your fee.

On one of the days there will be an optional session on using digital cameras, manipulating images, and printing those images which will concentrate on rare Oriental manuscripts. Those not wishing to partake of this option will be able to continue with the main workshop.

After lunch at the Needham Research Institute  we will include a session on putting manuscripts and books on the Internet, focussing on recent projects. Then there will be discussion and more "show & tell" sessions where participants will point out valuable things they have found useful in their work, and also work on problems they have encountered.

The two day course fee is £199.00, and includes the cost of lunch each day and supper on the first day. (Anyone coming for one day pays £99.00.) Please mention any dietary requirements (e.g. vegetarian, kosher) when booking and also include a note of what computer equipment and access to network resources you have at your place of work and what you would especially like to cover on the course.

If you require accommodation in college rooms on the first night please make that clear when booking. Bookings should be made with cheques payable to the National Committee for Information Resources on Asia and sent to:
